My game was on Peaceful and I was mining in a big open cavern near my house when all the sudden the whole game started shaking I then saved (before it stopped)and Left the game. So are there Earthquakes?

There have been reports of earthquake-like events in Minecraft, but these events are usually due to underground caverns. There are instances where the caverns are covered by sand/gravel and when one block is upset, the rest come tumbling down.
No there are not any earthquakes.
